CAfPRA continues to expand its footprint in Nigeria’s policy landscape, this time through active engagement on the ongoing amendments to the Data Protection Act of 2023. During the meeting, CAfPRA presented its agenda for inclusion in the amendment process, stressing the need to strengthen Nigeria’s data governance framework against foreign and globalist influences. Our advocacy focused on three critical areas:
- Protecting Nigeria’s tax system from foreign interest groups seeking to undermine sovereignty.
- Classifying GPS location data as sensitive information, given its potential misuse for surveillance and security breaches.
- Safeguarding citizens’ financial records as sensitive data, ensuring stronger privacy protections in the age of digital transactions.
These recommendations were well received and are now being considered within the broader amendment process, a major win in our effort to align Nigeria’s digital policies with sovereignty, accountability, and citizen protection.
Why This Engagement Matters
The amendment of the Data Protection Act of 2023 is more than a technical exercise; it is a matter of national security and sovereignty. By embedding CAfPRA’s priorities within this legislative process, we are ensuring that Nigeria’s policies safeguard the digital economy, protect citizens’ rights, and defend national interests from external control.
Moving Forward
CAfPRA will continue to actively engage lawmakers and policy stakeholders, leveraging this consultative status to influence legislative outcomes that serve Nigerians first. This development marks a turning point in our mission to redirect policy and secure Africa’s future from within its own institutions.
