Push for Policy Redirection on GMOs: Food Security as a National Security Priority

In collaboration with our sister organization, CEFSAR, the Center for African Policy Research and Advisory (CAfPRA) has re-ignited the anti-GMO conversation this time with a strong focus on driving food security in Nigeria through policy change.

Our position is clear: Nigeria must shift away from food capitalism, the profit-driven agenda advanced by GMOs, and redirect its policies toward food sovereignty and sufficiency. We believe the future of Nigeria’s food system lies in regenerative agriculture, anchored on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) that protect farmers, consumers, and our national heritage.

To kickstart this agenda, we held a Press Conference in Abuja, the nation’s capital. This marks a strategic shift in the anti-GMO movement: moving beyond awareness and grassroots mobilization into the policy corridors of government, where lasting change can be secured.

At the event, CAfPRA expressly called on the National Security Adviser (NSA) to intervene, recognizing that the unchecked promotion of GMO seeds poses not only agricultural and economic risks but also potential threats to national security, food sovereignty, and citizen well-being.

This advocacy is part of our broader mission to ensure Nigeria’s agricultural future is secured on indigenous seeds, sustainable farming systems, and farmer-led practices, not external dependency.

As we move forward, CAfPRA and CEFSAR remain committed to working with farmers, policymakers, civil society, and stakeholders to achieve a policy redirection that safeguards Nigeria’s food systems for generations to come.
